"One of the most significant town houses of the post-war period" - Historic England
Built in the early 1960s, Schreiber House sits in an unparalleled raised position on the edge of Hampstead Heath. Grade II-listed – a rarity for a post-war home – the house was designed by esteemed Scottish architect James Gowan. Defined externally by its blue rustic Staffordshire engineering brick and aluminum windows, the house has incredible light-filled lateral spaces, high ceilings, and exceptional attention to detail, throughout its 5,600 sq ft.

History
Shreiber House was Gowan's first commission after his partnership with fellow architect James Stirling ended, and is arguably his most important work. It is possible to trace some of the lineage from the duo's work at Langham House Close - a development which we have sold many homes in - but as Historic England says, in Gowan's work of this period he has a different approach to brickwork, and "he is seen as one of the first architects in the 1960s to incorporate elements of 1920s idioms in his work - here that of early Dutch modernism".
Schreiber House was inspired by the architecture of Scottish castles, hence the brick façade, which forms almost crenellated turrets, alongside a "drawbridge" pedestrian entrance, which leads to the main entrance of the house. Constructed from Yorkstone, this originally would have been heated in the winter months to prevent ice and snow from forming.
The current owners have sympathetically updated the house during their ownership, preserving and replicating the original features where necessary, and the result is a truly immaculate home which retains its original spirit.
