“The art deco façade employs sensitive classical references”

This two-bedroom apartment lies on the eighth floor of The Grampians, a Grade II-listed art deco mansion block in Shepherd’s Bush. Its interior spaces have been sensitively renovated by Ludlow and Holloway, taking inspiration from architect Simon Winstanley, and are well-lit by expansive Crittall windows that frame fantastic views over London. Originally designed by Maurice Webb in the art deco style, The Grampians was built between 1935-37. The designs for the block were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1935, and the building was Grade II-listed in 2003.

History

The Grampians was the first part of a proposed string of blocks of flats along a disused railway line. Designed by Maurice Webb in conjunction with Collcutt and Hamp, it is an excellent example of a 1930s art deco block, combining the detailed character of the entrance forecourt with the starker modernist architecture of the rest of the development.

Originally intended to provide affordable rented housing for working professionals, it is a highly characteristic interwar development and among the finest blocks of this kind. The design for the block was exhibited at the 1935 Royal Academy.
