House Style with Adam Sykes
After showing us around his Peter Foggo-designed masterpiece home in Wimbledon, Claremont Furnishings owner Adam Sykes shares his house style.
How would you describe the interiors of your house?
Comfortable and relaxed, with just a nod to mid-century Southern California.
If there was a fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be?
A bronze head which my mother sculpted whilst at art school in Leeds, circa 1953.
What was the last thing you bought for the house?
A couple of 1959 Charles Eames lounge chairs from a dealer in Brooklyn.
Where do you shop for your home?
Some antique dealers in the States, the London Mid-Century Shows, and Joanna Bird who specialises in studio pottery.
Top three coffee table books?
The Modern House by Jonathan Bell, Matt Gibberd and Albert Hill, Mid-Century Modern Complete by Dominic Bradbury and The Art of the Modern Potter by Tony Birks.
If money was no object, what changes would you make?
I’d install air conditioning since the house is too bloody hot in summer!
Less is more or more is more?
Neither too much nor too little was the aim here.
Design classics or contemporary pieces?
Apart from the sofas, there’s not much in the way of contemporary stuff here.
If you’re having people over for dinner, what do you cook?
Rare roast lamb with rosemary from the garden, and far too much garlic!
What are the best things about the neighbourhood?
The open spaces of south-west London and a couple of decent pubs.
