A complete renovation and an extension to this double-fronted Victorian house in Peckham is the work of its current owner, Jonathan Nicholls, whose high-spec fit-out includes a new kitchen with bespoke cabinetry, overhead skylight and Crittall doors. With three bedrooms, access to good schools and green spaces, the house is ideal for young families.
Riverside, Burrowbridge, Somerset
This 19th-century former Baptist chapel and meeting house has been elegantly repurposed as a contemporary living space with double-height ceilings, original lancet windows and wood panelling. The house is divided into two self-contained units that can either be opened up or closed off, making for a flexible, adaptable family home which could be used to keep grown-up children out the way or offer semi-independent living for ageing relatives.

DLM Architects reimagined the internal floorplan of this large Victorian house near Peckham Rye Park, offering an open, free-flowing kitchen/dining/living room, that opens out onto a garden via Crittall doors. As any family will know, though, open-plan living is best when it’s countered with more private, intimate spaces, and the family and reception rooms at the front of the house offer just this.
Atherden Road, London E5
At the heart of every family home should be a kitchen that allows the whole family to gather, communicate and feel a sense of togetherness. The light-fed, modern kitchen at this updated 1920s home in Clapton provides just that, with a large island being the natural place of congregation in the open-plan space, which feeds into a living room on one side and the garden on the other.
St Francis House, Hemingford Grey, Cambridgeshire
With 8,500 sq ft of space and eight bedrooms, this beautifully-restored and adapted Georgian home is one for a growing family. “I think the amount of space has been this house’s biggest gift, and what we’re most appreciative of. The light is gorgeous too, which everyone comments on when they come here. It’s a really calming space, even with three little girls and their friends running around,” said current owner Anna McDougall when we visited her and husband Willie for our Open House series.
