Cultural Diary: the best exhibitions and events in November
The clocks might have gone back, the nights are drawing in and Christmas shopping may have already commenced for some, but short days and festive commitments needn’t mean foregoing a cultural fix. Here are the best exhibitions and events in November.
Keith Haring: Art and Activism in 1980s New York, Tate Liverpool, Liverpool
Following our June recommendation to check out Keith Haring’s first show in the UK, we now flag a major international conference on his work and life that will take place at Tate Liverpool. A prominent social justice campaigner whose work famously connected the highbrow with the low, Haring’s figure is entangled with many stimulating themes, such as alternative communities, video activism, merchandise and design – all to be covered at the conference by leading scholars and artists.

Panel Discussion: Women in the Arts, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London
After the New York MoMA’s colossal project to shut its doors for five months and rethink its collection to feminise and de-colonise the art canon, the conversation about the lack of women leaders in the visual field comes to the UK.
Visit the Dulwich Picture Gallery on November 12th for an evening with Sarah Compton, journalist and former Arts-Editor-In-Chief at The Telegraph, in conversation with Jennifer Scott, Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, Carla van de Puttelaar, photographer and creator of the series Artfully Dressed, and Lisa Anderson, founder of the online platform Black British Art, discussing their own careers and experiences as women in the arts.
Tuesday 12th November
Anselm Kiefer, White Cube Bermondsey, London
Anselm Kiefer’s multifaceted body of work includes painting, sculpture and installation, often fusing into a compelling third space that transcends media boundaries. He uses his formal invention to explore the fraught subject of German identity and history through a critical lens – a contribution that has earned him the reputation as one of the most important European artists of the past 40 years. His new show at the White Cube in Bermondsey is one you don’t want to miss out on.

Charles Holland and Grayson Perry in Conversation, Building Centre, London
Join artist Grayson Perry and architect Charles Holland at the Building Centre in Fitzrovia, where the two will be discussing the design and production of ‘A House for Essex’, an ornate, ceramic-clad building and art piece that explores the contemporary character of Essex and commemorates Julie Cope, a fictional ‘Essex everywoman’ known from Perry’s famous tapestries. Whether you’ve seen the Essex gem up close or are still planning a visit, hearing the masters talk about their process will no doubt be elucidating.
Monday 18th November
Eco-Visionaries, Royal Academy of Arts, London
‘Confronting a planet in a state of emergency’ is the subheading for Eco-Visionaries, which presents responses to some of the most urgent ecological issue of our time. Interdisciplinary practitioners such as Olafur Eliasson, Virgil Abloh, Tue Greenfort and Andres Jacque, among many others, jointly draw attention to the planet’s endangered ecosystem through film, photography, architectural models and installation, providing a powerful wake-up call and reframing of environmental issues in innovative ways.

In the studio with Alexandria Coe, Rose Electra Harris and Isabella Cotier, Partnerships Editions in Islington Square, London
Stop by Islington Square between 12-2pm any day in November, where three emerging artists will transform the glass-fronted exhibition space into satellite versions of their studios, with each residency culminating in an exhibition where you can buy the pieces the artists created during their time in these pop-up studios. You can find Alexandria Coe’s studio during the first weekend of November, Rose Electra Harris’ residency is between November 6-17, and Isabella Cotier’s will last through the end of the month.
