These art, architecture and design happenings across the UK collectively represent the best exhibitions and events in June 2019. From pavilions to picture galleries, talks to tours, this guide will keep your diary full-up with stimulating outings.
Dulwich Pavilion 2019: The Colour Palace, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London
As part of the London Festival of Architecture (see below), one of our favourite young designers, Yinka Ilori, has teamed up with Peckham-based Pricegore architects to create a 10 metre-high ‘Colour Palace’, to be installed on the grounds of the Sir John Soane-designed gallery.
The design references the shapely architectural expression of Soane’s 1811 building, and the textile markets of Ilori’s native Nigeria in equal measure to comprise a cube of variegated geometric patterns that change when seen at different angles. Stay tuned for our upcoming feature on Ilori.
London Festival of Architecture, various locations, London
The 400-strong event programme of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) makes the month-long festival the biggest of its kind. The tours, installations, talks, and exhibitions that make up the schedule this year will explore the theme of ‘boundaries’, from the physical to the temporal, such as the paper models made by 15 practices such as OMMX and Office S&M as imagined architectural futures at the V&A’s Architecture Gallery.
As part of LFA’s ‘Studio Lates’ programme, which sees architecture and design studios across the city open their doors to the public, we’ll be welcoming visitors to our Southwark HQ. For more info, check here.
Serpentine Pavilion designed by Junya Ishigami and Faith Ringgold exhibition, Serpentine Galleries, London
June marks a double whammy at the Serpentine Galleries, with the unveiling of this year’s pavilion, designed by Japanese architect Junya Ishigami, following the opening of a new exhibition dedicated to New York-born artist Faith Ringgold.
Ishigami’s design for the pavilion, which has previously been granted to names like Oscar Niemeyer and Ai Weiwei, typifies the architect’s interest in fusing the natural with the man-made, resembling a mound of slate rising from the ground.
New Designers, Business Design Centre, London
A self-defined ‘launch-pad for fresh design talent’, New Designers is the best way to suss out the stars of tomorrow. From makers, designers and entrepreneurs, those included represent graduates from 170 courses across the UK and beyond. Talk directly to designers about how they are solving 21st-century problems, buy a piece from its maker or create your own print at a workshop.
Birmingham Design Festival, various locations, Birmingham
Now in its second year, Birmingham Design Festival puts the city on the design map with a four-day programme of workshops, talks and tours organised into three ‘districts’ – digital, graphic and product – at creative spaces across the city.
Keith Haring, Tate Liverpool, Liverpool
Rather surprisingly, the first major UK exhibition of American pop artist Keith Haring will open at Tate Liverpool on June 14th, with 85 artworks accompanied by visual material depicting the 1980s New York street culture that Haring was so influenced by.
