House of the Day: House along Saigoku Highway by Koyori + DATT
This nineteenth-century house in Muko, Japan, was renovated into a modern family home in 2016. Situated along the Saigoku highway, the introspective design screens the road and windows face into private courtyards landscaped by Yoichiro Iwamura.
The architects balanced exposed concrete with a variety of timbers to create a warm and inviting space. It successfully provides a modern, open-plan layout in keeping with the property’s characterful period features.
