When we visited Praktyka founders Henry Trew and Ania Wawrzkowicz at their revived 19th-century farmhouse – also designed by Rural Office – they told us how their business venture began. “We quit our jobs and went travelling with a half-formed vision for a hospitality project,” Henry explained. “Spending time with people who had already set up something similar gave us the courage we needed to do it for ourselves.” In 2018, they opened the doors to their environmentally minded refuge, its name taken from the word for ‘practice’ in Polish, Ania’s mother tongue. During guests’ stay, the couple invite them to connect with their creative spirit through art and wellbeing workshops. The programme includes jewellery making – run by Ania, an artist and former still-life photographer – painting, yoga, meditation, wild swimming and hiking.
The Heartwood is a meticulously designed self-catering sanctuary that sleeps two people. Each piece of mid-century furniture, alongside every book and object, has been as carefully considered as the architecture itself. The kitchen can be found within the timber pavilion, whose sheltered platform makes a wonderful spot for alfresco dining come rain or shine. And when it gets a little chillier, don’t fret: the dome includes a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy. September might mean the end of holidays for most, but nothing beats the end-of-summer blues like a countryside getaway. Situated under a mature oak tree, with far-reaching views of Exmoor beyond, there might not be a better place to watch the seasons begin to change.
