Open Doors: the 5 houses you must see at Open House this weekend
This weekend London opens its doors for Open House 2017. Celebrating 25 years since it launched in 1992, Open House offers the opportunity to explore the architecture and urban design that defines the city.
Beyond the buildings that shape the skyline, we’ve selected five homes that are not to be missed.
1. Tin House, W12
Designed by Henning Stummel, Tin House is a stunning earth-coloured structure of six metal-clad pyramidal forms. The house maximises space through six interconnected top-lit pods that conceal a remarkable domestic inner world.
2. Pear Tree House, SE22
This contemporary self-build architect’s house is situated on the backland site of a former fruit orchard and designed around a 100-year-old pear tree. Designed by Edgley Design, the house is divided into two volumes and linked by an internal glass walkway.
3. Bayer House, EC1
Bayer House was designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon in the 1950s and forms part of the Golden Lane Estate. The estate is regarded as a model for social housing and urban living and was the first public housing to be listed. A maisonette retaining much of the original detailing and finishes is open throughout Sunday.
4.Priory Green, N1
This Modern movement estate received Conservation Area Status after extensive refurbishment by the Peabody Trust. Pioneering in its use of concrete, it features some of the most sculptural stairways ever designed for social housing.
5. Eco Vale, SE23
Open throughout the day on Saturday, Eco Vale is an exceptional example of sustainable residential projects in the city. The Modern House recently sold all three properties in the development. Designed by Chance de Silva, each of houses benefits from an energy strategy devised in consultation with environmental specialists, including triple glazing, solar and photovoltaic panels and a green roof.
