How an architect couple transformed an old shop in Walthamstow into a restful wooden home
The house was in such a sorry state that, when the couple started the renovation, there were no original features worth saving. Instead, Liz and Zach conceived an infill house using renewable resources that would sit in harmony with its surroundings. “We really tried to respect what’s there,” says Liz, explaining how they landed on their design. As they both have a fondness for wood (particularly Zach, a former carpenter), they landed on a palette of predominantly timber for both the exterior and interior spaces – and the refined built-in furniture. They also used concrete for the floors and extensive glazing, resulting in a striking connection to the outdoors.
The studio, meanwhile – a second timber structure from which Liz and Zach run their firm – lies at the end of their garden. “It’s really inspiring sitting in the office and looking back at the house,” says Liz. “It has a beautiful back façade that you don’t often get to see.” The couple believes their completed home and studio represents the perfect marriage of “personal and professional”, adding that they enjoy having clients here. As Liz explains, the most convincing case for your work as an architect is made through the experience of it. “This is what we’re about, distilled into a built piece.”
