Win two tickets to California: Designing Freedom at the Design Museum
California has long boasted a glowing cast of experimental architectural commissions. Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, Albert Frey, Pierre Koenig and Quincy Jones have all made their mark. An expression of modernism’s purest utopian aspirations, the state remains a dream destination for midcentury design.
This summer the Design Museum showcases the continuation of this spectacular legacy in its long-awaited exhibition ‘California: Designing Freedom’.
“While California’s midcentury modernism is well documented, this is the first exhibition to examine the state’s current global reach. Picking up the story in the 1960s, the exhibition charts the journey from counterculture to Silicon Valley’s tech culture.”
Celebrating Californian design as a pioneer of personal freedom, the exhibition explores the liberating influence of its design culture through the themes of movement, perception, self-expression, production and collaboration.
Exhibits include Emory Douglas’ Black Panther posters, the ‘Whole Earth Catalog’ bible of self-sufficiency and designs for Buckminster Fuller’s Geodesic Domes.
The exhibition runs until 17 October 2017.
