After talking period homes versus new builds with Alex Bagner at her family home near London Fields, we’ve had a look through our homes currently for sale to showcase the best new homes for sale in the UK.
The Pavilion House, Reydon, Suffolk
This elegant single-storey house is the work of Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen of Danish practice Norm Architects, who drew inspiration from the long, utilitarian barns of the surrounding farmland and the simple, open and versatile vernacular of contemporary European architecture. The result is a slender house with a graceful profile, defined by expanses of glazing that appear to suspend the flat roof, as though it were floating.
Archway Studios, Dartford Street, London SE17
This award-winning house was widely recognised as one of the best new homes in the country when it was completed in 2012. It occupies a 19th-century viaduct in south London, but through its ingenious spatial arrangement and manipulation of natural light, the design overcomes the constraints of the plot to offer a new vision for residential architecture in the city.
House I, Streatham Common South, London SW16
Forming part of a two-house development close to Streatham Common, this house, designed by architect Rafael Borrego, is a rare example of an architect-led, new-build development in London. The five-bedroom house was completed in 2018 and has features that include a large internal courtyard, a gym and sauna, a private garage and a media room.
Barnsbury Square VIII, London N1
This first-floor, three-bedroom apartment forms part of an exceptional new project designed by Mark Dziewulski, in collaboration with Robert Barnes Architects. The building is defined by its use of glazing, which frames views of the pretty Barnsbury Square, and stands as a modern architectural contribution to the Barnsbury Conservation Area.
Steyning, West Sussex
One of the benefits of building a new home is the ability to deploy cutting-edge building techniques and materials, as showcased by this five-bedroom house in the South Downs National Park. The house was built by architect Matthew Wintersgill, and incorporates eco-friendly elements like a highly insulated shell, ground source heat pump, electric solar panels and triple glazing.
