On The Modern House Podcast, our co-founder Matt Gibberd invites guests to talk about their life and work, before asking them to pick their top three living spaces around the world. These can be anything from a beloved family home to Kettle’s Yard, and previous guests – who have included designer Faye Toogood and ceramicist Edmund de Waal – have picked spaces ranging from an Italian hotel to Le Corbusier’s Cabanon. This time, we’re inviting Courier magazine founder Jeff Taylor on to make his selection.
In 2013, Jeff quit his job and started Courier, a magazine that explores modern business. What began as a free publication handed out on the streets of Shoreditch has grown in size and scale since then, but its mission remains much the same: to seek out stories around the world of entrepreneurs and business owners who do life and work on their own terms. “Courier isn’t really about business, it’s about people,” says Jeff, and the breadth of creativity and ingenuity on display in a single issue is enough to give anyone in a 9-to-5 career anxiety – the latest issue includes people making a living from tie-dying, surfing, natural wine and ancient Peruvian textile design.
Tune in to the episode to hear Jeff talk more on the world of Courier – from the challenges of running a business to how it became a fully formed media brand – as well as growing up in Australia, his favourite places to travel to and the joys of his new Huf Haus, which he bought via The Modern House in 2020. Plus, what are his top three homes around the world? Listen now to find out.
