Fizmer episode three: 'An actual, recognisable house' appears

In the next episode of their self-build adventure, Josh and Anna Shinner watch as Fizmer transforms from a “brutal-looking, wintery mud bath” into “an actual, recognisable house.” After nine weeks of drawing, modelling and fabricating, the house’s towering steel beams are delivered to site and expertly assembled in just eight days.

The complex roof design has not been without its challenges, but as Josh explains, its concept is deeply rooted within its surroundings. “The context for the unusual roof geometry is the four houses within the surrounding woods … their Arts-and-Crafts-style roof forms – with cranks, caps, steep pitches and dormer windows – were something that we and our architect, Josh Rollin, strongly felt should be referenced.”

This part of the build has also given Josh and Anna a glimpse of their most-anticipated view from their house-to-be; a sightline running from the entrance hall all the way through the house and out to the wildflower meadows beyond. Anna explains: “It has made the most enormous difference in drawing you through and connecting the building to the wider landscape.”

Stay tuned for our next episode, in which Josh and Anna are expecting two things: a large delivery of timber, and their first baby …
