Life’s a beach at this characterful house in Margate
We all know what makes a Victorian house so appealing: large sash windows, high ceilings, good proportions and features, such as old wooden floorboards and fireplaces. But what makes one even better, in our opinion, is when those charming original details are brought right up to date and complemented by a thoughtful renovation. This lovely two-bedroom house, which came on the market earlier this week, proves just how considered design choices can enhance the charm of a period home – and paint it in an even brighter light than before.
The house makes a jolly first impression, thanks to the burnt-orange and dark-green accents of its façade that juxtaposes playfully against the traditional brickwork – a scheme echoed at the rear of the house too. Colour continues inside, with the warm but subtle pink glow of the walls, which have been cast beautifully in raw plaster. This material has been used across both floors, creating a seamless flow from one level to the next. The texture and tactile quality of the plaster is as pleasing to look at as the abstract paintings the artist owner has hung on the walls.
We’re equally enthused by the introduction of pine, which has been used to create a wonderful sculptural balustrade by the staircase. It sits in tune with the pale wood used to internally frames the sash windows. It’s surprising, perhaps, how well it also works with the industrial palette of the kitchen, comprised of polished concrete floors and stainless-steel surfaces.
This leads us nicely on to the glorious back garden, which is reached through floor-to-window glazed doors from both the kitchen and living space. That lush lawn, a peaceful retreat from the buzz of Margate, provides plenty of space to soak up the sun. That said, if you’re after a moment’s solitude, head for a swim in the sea. Thankfully, the big blue is just a short stroll away.
