September is a busy month for design aficionados. This year, the Shoreditch Design Triangle returns to the London Design Festival for the 18th consecutive year with an even-bigger line up of inspiring, industry-focussed events covering architecture, design, interiors and culture. Held over 16-18 September in London’s trendiest neighbourhood, the jam-packed programme of talks, tours and workshops will showcase the very best of cutting edge design. And, since you're in the area, we thought we'd share a handful of our latest local listings. These five exceptional Shoreditch homes embody both the modern creativity of the area and its industrial past.
Charlotte Road, London EC2
Among the intimate streets of boutiques and specialist coffee houses that form the coveted Shoreditch triangle, this former furniture warehouse is a rare freehold find on this peaceful street, one of the area’s most sought-after addresses. The house has been renovated from top to bottom with great sensitivity to its industrial past and scale, extending to almost 2,500 sq feet across five levels. Features include revealed beams overhead, limed pine flooring underfoot, a large rooftop terrace, private rear courtyard garden and even a gallery space offering vehicular access.
Hoxton Square III, London N1
This bright two-bedroom apartment lies right in the heart of Shoreditch, moments from the greenery of Hoxton Square Park, within easy reach of the area’s exciting mix of bars, restaurants and galleries. This light third-floor apartment is situated in a handsome red-brick building (previously a hospital), with original floorboards, Crittal windows, modern black kitchen units, and soaring ceilings. The open plan living space allows for various configurations, making it the perfect creative canvas.
Clere Street, London EC2
This live/work apartment sits on the third floor of a former Victorian warehouse in the South Shoreditch Conservation Area - a location equally perfect for well-loved east London neighbourhoods and the City. With a profile of golden sandstone, and set over 1,670 sq ft, it has three bedrooms that extend from a large open-plan living space which, orientated on a south-east to south-west axis, is doused in natural light all day long. The decorative scheme is pared back to allow the incredible light and views to take centre stage.
Suna House, Curtain Road, London EC2
This bright two-bedroom live/work apartment lies on the third floor of Suna House, a sensitively conceived warehouse conversion on Shoreditch’s Curtain Road. A wide bank of glazing, painted a striking and dynamic pillar-box red by the current owner, draws in plenty of light and provides access to a long, private south-facing balcony - a natural extension of the internal plan in summer months. White-washed walls and limewashed floors offer the perfect, unobtrusive backdrop for art and furniture.
Martha’s Buildings, London EC1
This two-bedroom warehouse has recently been renovated to an exceptional standard by architect Julie Richards. It lies a few minutes walk from lively Old Street, within easy reach of the best of Shoreditch. Interior spaces focus on the guiding principles of space, materiality and light to create a flowing set of rooms that are both versatile and welcoming. Views over the internal courtyard’s planted living wall offer a lush green outlook rarely found in such a central setting, offering a serene effect, subtly removed from the buzz of the city outside. This apartment has won several awards and has been featured in major editorial publications.
